Valdez - Alaska

The Valdez Glacier lies almost forgotten just outside the port of Valdez (south-central Alaska). At the end of the 19th century, the glacier was used by fortune-hunters as an All American route to the goldfields in the heartland of Alaska.

The rest of the glacial lake is perfect for a kayak trip between the icebergs calving from the glacier. In a double kayak we made an unforgettable trip between large icebergs and ice caves whilst enjoying the open views.

This iceberg, calved from Valdez Glacier, seems to be the result of human work. In reality it is eroded to this form by the action of tide, wind and weather.
