Greenland is the world’s largest island and extends about 2,670 kilometers from north to south and 1,050 kilometers from east to west at its widest point. The area is 2,2 million square kilometers, 4 times the area of France. Over four fifths of its landmass (some 1,7 million square kilometers) is covered in an ice sheet with an average thickness of 1,500 meters, and reaches a maximum thickness of about 3,000 meters.

 

With a population of about 56,000, Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world. All towns and settlements are situated along the ice-free coast, with the population being concentrated along the west coast. Transportation between towns and villages happens by air, by sea, dogsled or snow scooter.
